Wish You Were Here

Wish you were here -
Strategies for sophisticated post-apocalyptic living
The project is about coming up with an idea of a survival plan after mass destruction of the world. The task is to explore how art and design become key to understanding change and adapting to a new world that is unfamiliar.

My ideas so far are as follows:
Design a range of images to show living conditions, how we have adapted and how the survivor's have started to rebuild, maybe a type of comic book.

Supplies around us are used to create the things we used to have; like furniture and objects that keep us entertained.

Create a hand rendered & digital cook book for cannibals.

Show how people have changed and created hate for one-another, try to hurt others and begin to steal to keep themselves alive.

Transmit feelings through Art & Design - Anxiety, Nervous, Afraid, Suicidal etc.

Create a trailer using animation and sound to capture the everyday life of someone during post-apocalyptic living.

Designing a booklet with a story line about the apocalypse, and how the survivors have dealt with the disaster.

I began putting mood boards together to help me visualise dishes, and how I can put parts of a human body together to create a substitute for the lost food supplies. I began to look into human anatomy, and came up with ideas for cannibal dishes which lead me to produced some quick drawings.

I researched into 'Da Vinci's' early work which included human anatomy, his drawings are very detailed with descriptive text. I think they look almost obsessive, and plan to use this style during the project. I also enjoy the use of torn paper, creating an old ancient look.

After researching into books, I wanted to create a humorous styled cook book. I came across the writer 'Buck Peterson' who wrote the book 'Cooking with roadkill'. He uses illustrations to amuse the audience, including an entertaining title.

I found a book by 'Zilly Rosen' called 'Zombie Cupcakes', I found it to be very entertaining and full of laughter. I especially find the front cover amusing and different; how she has made the cakes look like the ground and zombies rising from them.

I also looked into other cook books, including lots of different styles and approaches. This also gave me an idea of the layout and how images need to look persuasive to the audience. I may use the step by step layout inside the booklet.

After finding some computer generated layouts and covers, I began to look for hand made cook books to see if I could gain any ideas from them. I found some to be messy and made with different materials, while others were professional looking and included small illustrations.

Cook Book For Cannibals: Progress

After trying out paper, I decided to gather materials such as cloth and fabric to use. This idea was given to me during a tutorial, as paper is to basic and may be hard to find during an apocalypse. I will also stick to hand rendered, as the computer version I tried wasn't very shocking or persuasive.

After more research, I'm interested in using the typeface from news paper to create text inside the book.

I wanted to create an old effect within the booklet, so I decided to use tea to stain pieces of paper and burn the edges. I wasn't greatly impressed with the outcome and it was almost like I was forcing the paper to become old and changing the context. I then began to use material to create pages for the booklet and have an old, homemade look. After a while of working on the project, I also changed my mind about having a cartoon illustration cook book and now wanted it to look some-what realistic.

After experimenting with a range of materials, I used newspaper to collage and create the front and rear of the book. I also used old cardboard and cotton that I had stitched together to make pages for the book. I created a number of images using Photoshop which I then printed out, but had to find a way of placing them inside the book. I didn't really want to draw them in because I wanted the book to look real and like it had been created in a desperate time. I was given the idea of somehow transferring the image from paper onto the material, but didn't want to use photographs. I then began to research and found Iron-on transfers, I printed out the image onto them and used the sheets to place the illustrations inside the book. Originally, I was going to apply cut out bold newspaper text to the front cover showing 'Cooking With Cannibals' or 'Cannibal Delights'. After a while I preferred it plain because I think if someone randomly picks the book up with out not knowing what it was about, it would add to the context and may give more of an effect upon the viewer.  I was overall happy with the outcome as it looked genuine and attention grabbing, the only thing I probably would have changed would of been the typeface I used.
